The most important book one can read in early recovery! I am a substance abuse counselor and "Living Sober" is one of the most important books that my clients could read. It literally teaches them step by step and day by day how to live sober. Stopping drinking or drug use is just the beginning. Once you take away the one thing that consumed every minute of your waking day, you are left with an emptiness that's hard to describe. "Living Sober" shows you how to fill that emptiness with healthy activities and daily living skills so you can resume a balanced and rewarding life. It has gotten me through many a rough day and I think it is invaluable as a tool among those in early recovery.

I feel this book is an excellent companion to the 'Big Book" of AA. This book goes between the lines of the Big Book, in helpingpeople new to recovery, and gives in sort of easy layman's terms what happens in early days of recovery. It is a simple guidelineof subjects related to the Big Book, after the first 164 pages, you find stories written by folks who have been sober for a few years.It helps gain some strength & hope that the AA 12-step program does work.

My favorite recovery book because I didn't know how to live sober. This book offers tips on living clean and sober, methods AA members have used for not drinking.

Most people would agree that Alcoholics Anonymous has helped loads of people. As AA would say, over two million members to date are active in the fellowship. Living Sober provides some concepts which should be familiar to the alcoholic but serves as good reinforcement. The person who isn’t an alcoholic would learn how to support someone that was. Living Sober can provide some deeper insights into what would be good for the alcoholic life. I feel it may lack in some ways because years have passed since it has seen a revision.Nevertheless, it is a 5 Star book because of the content and it serves me well in my recovery to touch base on things here and there.

Every person in recovery should have this book!!!! it’s one that you can read over and over again and go to certain sections when you need a little help- through the day, through events, social gatherings, or just when you’re by yourself in the moment!

I bought the eBook as a supplement for my e library. I take my device to mtgs and am able to carry many pounds of books with ease now.My 3rd sponsor used to chair a MTG that focused on this book, and I have fond memories of this book in early recovery.It has good advice for the newcomers and old timers. I can pull it up diuring times of crisis, and even enjoy an essay during times when I am not in crisis.

This is one of the classics for learning to live a new lifestyle of sobriety. Suggestions for creating new habits and insights for handling possibly difficult situations.

I bought it for my daughter. She opened it, said thanks, got a hug. Haven't seen it since. But she's not drinking either. So I don't know. its been over a year and a half.

I bought this book somewhat reluctantly, worried that it would be too preachy for me to enjoy or relate to. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, while there is a good deal of discussion about Lauren's faith and the Scrugg's family's faith, it is not a preachy book. It was inspiring on many levels: the story of Lauren's parents and how they came back together after seven years of being divorced (a divorce that was pretty bitter to begin with) and the story of how the community pulled together to help the family through this crisis were great subplots and inspiring on their own. You definitely feel that Lauren has a "young" or immature voice -- there is a lot of description about people's looks, dress, etc., but she also recognizes in the end that outward appearance was something she placed too much value on. She doesn't try to make herself out to be perfect, and she lets the reader in on the struggles she endured, including lashing out at her parents during her darker times. I read this in about a day and I enjoyed it more than I expected to. There is even a good description of the accident and how it could have happened to anyone, for those who still think Lauren was just a dumb blonde who should have missed the spinning propeller.

Terrific! An uplifting memoir about a terrible incident that happened to a remarkable woman. Lauren is an inspiration for all of us. I thoroughly enjoyed how this memoir was written from different points of view. Lauren speaks quite a bit, but you also hear from her twin sister, her mother, and her father. I could relate to Lauren's story, but also to her mother's as I thought about my daughter. Wonderful book. There is a lot of mention of faith in it, but if you apply your own belief it is not too much. Looking forward to reading her follow-up with her husband, Jason Kennedy.

What an inspiring, motivating and brave young woman!I was moved while reading the experiences of the Scruggs family.My heart goes out to them, and I'm so thankful that Lauren has such an amazing support system.With the addition of learning how Lauren grew up, I enjoyed picturing the scenes where she takes trips to New York--checking out the town by herself & interning at Michael Kors and Gossip Girl (jealous!).She has a wonderful tone of voice throughout the book, so it was heartbreaking to realize her pain & suffering after the accident. But it becomes evident how faith has helped ease her into acceptance & strengthen her character. It's what we shall hope occurs with any challenge we face in life.I appreciate the family's honesty and words of comfort to all--specifically to never lose hope.I wish them the best always.x

This is an inspirational true story of Lauren Scruggs and her family. Lauren suffered life-threatening injuries when she walked into an airplane propeller on a dark evening in Dec 2011. She lost her left hand and an eye and had to go through multiple surgeries. One of the things I liked was that the first half of the book alternated chapters in the voice of each family member, so you see the story from different viewpoints. This could have been a tragic story but it is also a story of faith and hope in the face of extreme trials and is, therefore, uplifting.

I first heard about Lauren's accident on Monday Dec. 5, 2011. I was deeply shocked by the tragedy of the events and instantly became interested in following the progress of her recovery because it seemed like such a random, tragic and awful event that could have happened to anyone. Adding to that the fact that here was this beautiful young girl, instantly changed forever. I followed the family's struggles through their CaringBridge site updates and was continuously inspired by the postings her mom would make on a regular basis. Reading the book was like getting to know this family personally. Many of the stories shared through its pages echoed of postings I had read before, yet these were much more detailed, personal and with background into the family story that made me feel connected. It is such a story of faith, triumph and recovery, that I was unable to put the book down until I finished reading it. It really makes you wish for this woman's complete recovery and permanent mark in this world. Truly an amazing story.

Like the messiness of life that does not come with a single challenge, climax and resolution, this book beautifully weaves together the complexity of perspective and experience that impact this young woman's life in a profound culmination of adversity and fortuity. I stayed up into the morning reading this book wanting to find out 'what happens next.' I have purchased it as well for a friend and have recommended it to many others. A great read as well for our teens who need to understand the importance of knowing their identity and seeing the realities of the real world - the tough decisions and easy mistakes - and still know that they can pursue success without abandoning virtue.

Loved reading about Lauren's story from her point of view as well as her families point of view. I did follow this news story years ago and this book gets into more detail about the accident as well as her recovery. Yes, their Christian beliefs are very evident but it's who they are and it is part of her journey through life. The only part that I found unnecessary was the part regarding the parents divorce. Yes, it was a part of Lauren's life but I feel it didn't add anything to the story.

Loved the upclose picture the Scruggs family has given of this most devastating tradgety. Truly filled with hope and a sense of peace in the midst of great turmoil
