This book might be useful for someone who is very familiar with kiln building but not useful for someone who has never used or built a kiln. In my opinion, it is definitely not for the beginner!

I think I've bought every book available on kiln construction. They explain the methods of construction, how to lay bricks, show every imaginable kiln design, but nothing concrete. Finally Joe Finch has written THE book!! Complete plans for 3 specific kilns. A gas fired kiln, a combination gas/wood kiln and a wood fired kiln. Plans are specific and clear. Diagrams, materials list, tips and more. Joe is also quick to reply via email to any questions you might have. As soon as the snow melts I am finally going to build the gas/wood fired kiln!!!

Beautiful book and insight into kiln building. Not a substitute for hands on experience but close to it. Will give you confidence.

Having never built a kiln before this book is an invaluable source for how to construct a pottery kiln. The only reason I gave it four rather than five stars is that it is a British book and the metric system and refractories used are based on what is common in England and different to what is commonly available in America but the techniques and methods can be used for American products with success. I am very pleased with the content as there is no other book that is so clear in explaining step by step, brick by brick how to construct a kiln.

Excellent book for studying kilns. The photos are beautiful and the information is top notch. There is a lot of 'potter humor' in the way the author writes. It is truly a treasure.

Originally, it was the federal government’s de-funding of affordable housing in the early 1980s that led to today’s homeless crisis. The book examines those structural reasons for homelessness but also looks at what grassroots groups in Fresno, working on alternatives, have accomplished. Although the end to homelessness has been elusive for those groups doing business as usual, the paradigm shifts this book suggests give new hope that a better world is possible. Mike Rhodes is a journalist and former editor of the Community Alliance newspaper in Fresno California. He is a photo journalist, was a news reporter for KFCF 88.1 FM and has produced many videos documenting politics in Fresno and the Central Valley. He is married, has two adult children, one grandchild and lives in the community where he was born, Fresno. Politically a progressive, he is optimistic that a movement for social and economic justice will emerge and transform the world in which we live. A better world is possible!
